Winifred Atwell came to Britain in 1945. Within a few months of arriving she met the man of her dreams and married him. During her most prosperous period she had many hits including 2 number one records. 
 
She was a woman of many firsts including being the first black woman to open a hairdressers for black women; she was also a landlady, owing many properties, and she was also a classical pianist of the highest quality. Yet somehow hardly anyone has ever heard of her.
